How to gamify your habits
The five steps
- Pick a few habits, not twenty. Start with three to six actions you can finish in a day, such as a 30-minute walk, a workout, 20 pages of reading or an hour of deep work.
- Give each habit points. Make harder habits worth more. A workout might be 50 points and a glass of water 5. The numbers only need to feel fair to you.
- Track a level. Add your points into one total and set levels, for example a new level every 300 points. Watching a bar fill is the heart of the game.
- Attach real rewards. Decide in advance what a milestone earns: a nice dinner, a lazy afternoon, a new book. Rewards you choose yourself work better than rewards someone else picks.
- Add other people. A friend who sees your week, or a weekly scoreboard, turns private effort into something worth showing up for.
Do the bad habits count?
They can. Subtracting points for doomscrolling or skipped workouts keeps the score honest. Keep it light: the goal is awareness, not guilt.
Paper, spreadsheet or app?
Paper and spreadsheets work if you enjoy maintaining them. Most people stop when the bookkeeping becomes a chore, which is why a habit game app is useful: it handles the maths and the progress screen.
How IRLXP does this
IRLXP is a free habit tracker RPG. Every habit you log earns XP that levels up four skills (Health, Wealth, Happiness and Intelligence) and a pixel RPG character, who unlocks gear from Wood to Eternal as you level. You can set your own activities and XP values, add bad habits that cost XP, spend coins in a Coin Shop of rewards you pick, and challenge friends to duels. It works offline and needs no sign-up to start. Compare it with other options in our best habit tracker games for 2026.
Questions
Does gamifying habits actually work?
Many people find it easier to keep going when progress is visible and rewarding. It is not a guarantee, so start small and adjust the points and rewards until the game feels motivating rather than stressful.
What is the best app to gamify habits?
It depends on what you want. IRLXP is a free habit RPG for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and the web, and Habitica is a well-known option with a large community. See our comparison pages for details.
How many habits should I track at first?
Three to six. Add more only after the first ones feel automatic.
